Åsa Simma appointed honorary doctor at Stockholm University

Performing artist, director, playwright and activist Åsa Simma is one of the 2025 honorary doctors, who have made an outstanding contribution to the university’s research and education.

–Åsa Simma has regularly taught students in theatre studies at Stockholm University, a gesture that contributes to making Sami culture understandable in concrete ways for young people. Her multilingual approach and practice are linked to both ongoing research in the subject and to course development in areas such as dramaturgy. She is a living example of theatre studies’ endeavour to engage in a mutual dialogue with performing artists about the cultural and social significance of the performing arts, says Dirk Gindt, professor of theatre studies at the Department of Culture and Aesthetics.

Dáiddáriid Vásáhusat

“But to yoik a place, for example, is important so that the place remembers who it is. And it’s also meaningful from a healing perspective. A place that has been completely clear-cut or exploited, so to speak, has been subjected to a kind of trauma. And to have its own yoik performed there is like a form of trauma processing for the place. I think that kind of thinking is very important.”

Bures, ráhkis dáiddárat!

After a very successful presentation of Dáiddáriid Vásáhusat during Ubmejen Biejvieh in Umeå on March 6, 2025, the project is now being further developed toward a larger exhibition during KulturSápmi in Guovdageidnu (Kautokeino) in June 2025.

Dáiddáriid Vásáhusat is an artistic presentation of Sámi artists’ lived experiences, where past, present, and future meet. Giron Sámi Teáhter has posed questions, and Sámi artists from across Sápmi have responded with text, images, sound, and live expressions – through yoik, duodji, performing arts, literature, visual art, music, and more.

The project is an artistic contribution to the truth and reconciliation processes currently taking place in Norway, Sweden, and Finland. During the June exhibition, a large gathering (dievasčoahkkin) for Sámi artists will also be held. The outcome will be a report addressed to Sámi parliaments, governments, and research communities – an important contribution to the reconciliation efforts across Sápmi.

We encourage all Sámi artists to take part in this important work!
